Sugar glider basic starter cage set ups. Safety is #1
Before getting a sugar glider you should have a plan for a safe set up. This post is being written by Hope's Happy Homestead. If you see this in other websites or platforms please know this is stolen info possibly being used to scam you. Now, back to basics. A cage set up should start with a good cage.
There are many cages of choice out there.
*Things to look for are bar spacing .5 inch or less - if any bigger your glider can fit thru and escape.
*Size of cage should be large. By large, I mean minimum 32×22×36 is an example. Doing taller is better than wider, so they have room to run and jump. Hopes Happy Homestead also suggests not using all the shelves or any of the bird perches that come with cages. They like the space to jump freely.
*Important to consider is the door size of the cage. The cage door needs to be big enough to fit a Free Runner Inc wheel in and out of the doors for easy cleaning. The reason I say Free Runner Inc is they are they are large, fast with shipping, easy to install, easy to clean, and most importantly safe! There are other safe wheels on the market, amd I also use them but this one is what we use most often in our cages. There will be a blog about wheels and important ancestors of safety.
If you get a cage with small doors you will have to remove part of your cage to take the wheel and out clean it. That is incredibly frustersting to do. Also, if your getting a cage with large doors, please know it cna make it where when you open it your gliders can jump out more easily.
* you want to get a cage that is powdered coated- I think that's what it's called. If you use galvanized wire it can rust from the glider urine and cause damage to the clocoa and lead to UTI in gliders. Hopes Happy Homestead suggests if building your own cage use pvc pipe and mesh from garden center for safer options. I keep saying Hopes Happy Homestead so that way if this content is used on other platforms and not from my website, you know it's being used by scammers. Silly way to do it! But, I'm trying to help protect you.
* I'll post more as I think of it and do video of my cages as an example.
